THE AUTRY PRESENTS EVANGELINE REMIXED

THE AUTRY PRESENTS EVANGELINE REMIXED
FEATURING LOS LOBOS MUSICIANS DAVID HIDALGO AND LOUIE PÉREZ
March 27, 2013, 7:30 P.M.
$20 General Admission, $15 Autry Members
LOS ANGELES, CA – March 7, 2013 – The Autry National Center presents  EvangelineREMIXED, a work-in-progress multimedia play featuring musical performances by Grammy Award–winning Los Lobos musicians David Hidalgo and Louie Pérez, on Wednesday, March 27, 2013, at 7:30 p.m.
Set in East L.A. during the late 1960s, Evangeline REMIXED centers on a young Chicana, played by Catherine Lidstone, who is a devoted daughter by day and a Hollywood go-go dancer by night. As East L.A. begins to deal with its particular civil rights issues, she must reconcile her individual journey with the need to hold on to her relationship with her family and her neighborhood. Her struggle reflects the shared history of the city and its citizens at a time of enormous social change.
Evangeline REMIXED will debut Pérez not just as one of the project’s originators but also as a featured storyteller and member of the ensemble of actors and musicians.Evangeline REMIXED is co-written by Pérez with Theresa Chavez and Rose Portillo, who direct the production. Pérez and Hidalgo draw on their 40-year catalogue to provide the soundtrack for the play, marking the first time the songbook is part of an original production. The project also integrates video designed by award-winning cinematographer Claudio Rocha, making Evangeline REMIXED a dynamic live multimedia performance.
“My lyrics have always come from a personal experience populated by people, places, and things from the reality of growing up in a Mexican-American community,” explains Pérez.
The performance, which is presented in partnership with About Productions, takes its title from Los Lobos’s 1985 rocker “Evangeline.” This REMIXED Evangeline production returns to the Autry after an initial sold-out workshop performance in 2011.
“We are pleased to present Evangeline REMIXED as part of our commitment to sharing the diverse stories of the American West through exhibitions and a range of public programs,” said Robyn Hetrick, Director of Public Programs and Events at the Autry. “We’re delighted that in addition to audiences enjoying the evening performance featuring David Hidalgo and Louie Pérez, high school students from East Los Angeles will have the opportunity to interact with these artists to help give voice to their own stories and experiences.”
In partnership with About Productions’ Young Theaterworks, a program serving at-risk high school students, the Autry will provide transportation for over 120 students and teachers to attend an open rehearsal of EvangelineREMIXED on Friday, March 22. Students will get an inside look at the production and engage in dialogue with Portillo and Chavez about topics including traditional gender roles in Latino families, the role of youth in protest movements, and their personal identification with the stories being told. A tour of the museum will follow, tying in themes from the project with cultural artifacts from the Autry’s collection.
General admission tickets for the performance are $20 for general admission and $15 for Autry members. Admission includes a post-play discussion for all attendees. A private reception with Pérez and Hidalgo will also take place following the performance. Tickets for the program plus the post-performance reception are $50 and support the education programs of About Productions. For tickets or information, please visit TheAutry.org.

Welcome to Playpix Art Gallery!

Photographer: Estevan Orial

Amigos,

Welcome to the brand, spanking new Playpix Gallery!

I hope that soon this store will get popular enough so I can add visual artists that I like, and give them the opportunity to sell their work and make a little dough.

Nobody is going to get rich off this, but it can add a little bit of needed green to some deserving wallets, and at the same time, showcase great art to peeps that don’t normally browse fine art galleries or websites.

I know some very firme artists out there that are doing cool, interesting pictures and sculptures, that you might find appealing and may, if you like, find their way onto a flat surface in your office, living area or sleeping quarters.

For starters I’m going to put up some of my own things… I know, I know, here’s another rock and roller that suddenly fancies him or herself a painter to fuel some maniacal ego trip. Look, I’m not a guy who just because he’s in a cool band and writes some moderately entertaining and occasionally insightful songs, who one night discovers as he lays in bed that he can do anything.

I’ve been doing art all my life and I love it. I intentionally stayed away from showing this side of me for a long time because of that rock dude/I’m an artist now stigma.

Sheesh! Okay, enough with the disclaimer, here’s the deal:

I did six drawings that hang together under one mildly amusing theme and reproduced them as a series of hand signed and numbered limited edition prints that I’ll sell real cheap. (I can get you on original drawings and other stuff later).

I found a really great printer in Austin TX who did a fantastic job of inkjet printing on Strathmore 400 80lb acid free paper, (laser and inkjet is quickly becoming a legit printing method among fine artists).

The size is 8 1/2” x 11”, so they’re not a big investment in framing and don’t require a lot of wall space, so you won’t have to take down sis’s high school graduation picture to accommodate them.

Take note: They will NOT be reprinted after the run is sold out, meaning that you can rest assured that what you get might one day become valuable after I’m dead. Your investment will be secure as long as you don’t use them as coasters or placemats.

That’s it. So if you like ‘em, buy up and I’ll make more. This is gonna be fun.

Sincerely yours,

Louie Perez

Three Louies Travel to Aspen, June 21, 2012

The Three Louies takes it’s show on the road to the Aspen’s Solazu Writer’s Conference on June 21, 2012.

The Three Louies (featuring Louie Perez, Luis Torres and Luis Rodriguez)  takes it’s show on the road to the Aspen’s Solazu Writer’s Conference on June 21, 2012.
More subtle than the Three Stooges, more bilingual than the Three Musketeers and funnier than Manny, Moe and Jack — The Three Louies will make you laugh, will make you cry, will make you remember and maybe provide just a tiny bit of insight into the wacky world that is the human condition.
This year’s festival, ”Solazu,” presented by the Aspen Writers Foundation, will celebrate the rich literary heritage of our neighbors to the south: Latin America and the Caribbean. Traveling the spine, seas and islands of the Americas, Aspen Summer Words 2012 will explore one of the most ancient and diverse regions on the planet. With leading Latin American and Caribbean authors at the helm, our festal will traverse vast distances, 14 millennia, 51 territories, 6500 miles, and more than 1000 languages to reveal the soulful stories that unite us all.

In many respects, The Three Louies are representative of the the arc of the Chicano experience in America. They were all distilled in the cauldron of strident activism of the 1970s. They all made their way through public schools that generally regarded Mexicans as somehow unworthy and incapable. They learned how to get the most out of education. And they all made a dent in the fields they entered, always remembering to smile and make others do the same.
An evening of fun and maybe even some frolic. The Three Louies.

The Three Louies Are Set to Perform at the Crawford Family Forum in Pasadena on Jan 5, 2012

The Three Louies - Luis J. Rodriguez, Louie Perez, Luis Torres

Remembrances and reminiscences about growing up on Los Angeles’ Eastside will take center stage in a group performance by a member of Los Lobos, a renowned Chicano writer and an award-winning Chicano journalist.

The iconoclastic trio Chicano known as The Three Louies will perform at the Crawford Family Forum in the auditorium of KPCC Radio in Pasadena on January 5 at 7:00 pm. The performance is part of the ongoing Town Hall for the 21st Century series. The address is 474 S. Raymond Avenue.

For more info go to: http://www.scpr.org/events/

The performance is open to the public and there is no charge for admission.

The Three Louies recently performed to a standing-room-only crowd at the Vincent Price Museum on the campus of East Los Angeles College where they received a standing ovation.

The Three Louies comprise a group that is difficult to define. Their presentations are part performance art, part comedy and part social satire. The group features three Chicanos whose roots are on Los Angeles’ Eastside and who have individually pursued successful careers in music, literature and journalism. They carry on an unscripted conversation and “invite the audience to eavesdrop.”

The performance evokes something like a mixture of Spalding Gray and a Chicano version of the Marx Brothers.

The members of the Three Louies are Louie Perez of the musical group Los Lobos, nationally renowned writer Luis J. Rodriguez and award-winning journalist and broadcaster Luis Torres.

“I’m really looking forward to performing in Pasadena as part of The Three Louies,” says musician Louie Perez. “Considering what’s going on in the world around us, a public display of silliness is way overdue,” he jokes.

He explains The Three Louies, who are longtime friends, have a conversation in front of an audience, with the audience essentially eavesdropping on the conversation. Topics range from “growing up Mexican” to overcoming discrimination and dislocation and persevering in professional careers – all with a satirical wink at life in America.

“It’s politics, it’s poetry, it’s every topic under the sun,” says writer Luis J. Rodriguez. “The Three Louies makes the Three Stooges look smart,” he jokes. “But on the serious side, it’s what three vatos from East L.A. can do with little to work with but family, community, determination and lots of headaches,” he adds.

Says Rodriguez, “We sit down and share our stories – stories that should wind through any audience and wake them up to their own stories.”

“We’ll begin with our take on the latest perversities in the news headlines,” says Luis Torres. “But our conversations – punctuated by anecdotes and reminiscences – will cover a range of ideas and experiences about growing up on the eastside of L.A,” says the former KNX/CBS reporter. “It’s as if the three of us were just chatting at a party, and we invite the audience to listen in – and maybe add some recollections of their own.”

The performance is free and open to the public.

Luis J. Rodriguez’ latest book is a memoir titled “It Calls you Back.” Louie Perez is currently on a nationwide tour with the rock band Los Lobos. Luis Torres, formerly of CBS/KNX Radio, is the author of a forthcoming book examining the 1968 East Los Angeles high school student walkouts and the work of educational reformer Vahac Mardirosian. He frequently contributes book reviews and feature stories to the San Gabriel Valley Newspapers and writes for national publications.
